Sotterrata ben al di sotto della decadente città di Dirtmouth giace Hallownest, una grande civiltà del passato, ora caduta in disgrazia. Ladri ed esploratori si avventurano sotto la superficie in cerca di gloria, tesori e antichi segreti. Tra queste rovine saccheggiate, però, si aggirano ora strane creature, vittime di un nauseabondo veleno che filtra dal terreno.
Nei panni di un viaggiatore chiamato Hollow Knight, avventurati nelle profondità del vasto labirinto di caverne, corridoi e città cadute in rovina che formano questo misterioso e decadente regno. Le città e le colonie sparse in questo territorio sotterraneo ospitano una gran quantità di strani e curiosi personaggi, mentre enigmi e tesori custoditi da terribili creature attendono coloro che abbandonano il sentiero battuto per esplorare anche gli angoli più reconditi.
